Conservation North met with Dene elders in Fort Nelson in October 2024 to see what post-wildfire “salvage” logging looks like on the ground in the boreal forest.
Photo 1 shows a forest that experienced wildfire in 2024 (Parker Lake). There are dead trees (both fallen and standing), live trees, a resilient seed bank, intact soil ecosystems, and a quickly recovering understory. This forest remains healthy, complex, and full of habitat and biodiversity.
Photo 2 shows a forest that burned in 2023 (Patry fire) and was ‘salvage’ logged in 2024. Photo 3 is the log pile on the cutblock being salvage logged.
